I have done a variety of industrial projects.  Most of the recent work I cannot show because of sensitive technology and patents.  I do have permission to show one animated clip, minus the animated graphics, charts and diagrams that were a big part of the original piece.  Enjoy my retro space music that replaces the original voice-over.  Additionally, I bet you can guess which renderings I did just for fun.

Che the dog, who is too old to see well, has the friend he really needs – he just doesn’t know it yet.  Get a PDF ebook edition for only $2.99.  There is also a nice print version.  Besides the illustrated story, I put extra drawings on the page corners.  These can be used as a flipbook, the front and the back of pages.  For any intrepid little reader that wants to see how animation works, there are additional pages of drawings that show the complete movements of Che and his friend.  The book finishes with a color catalog of the native wildflowers in Che’s garden.

Jacksonville Today Magazine – an early article on AIDS awareness. I was dropping off art for another project and overhead an art director talking about this assignment, which another artist was doing. I went home and jammed on this, my version. It got published and won a magazine publishers award.

Rivers and natural sections of the intracoastal waterway use to be very wild. I don’t know what generated more respect, the eagles, great horned owls, or alligators. I would have wanted a shark cage over my back deck.

This real estate illustration and the one above it tied each other for an Addy award. Man, how time flies. Check the prices.

This was proposed for the Mayor of Jacksonville’s retro street party. It was deemed too racy at the time – girl can wiggle.

I use to do a lot of editorial work for the Times Union newspaper. This was the usual style.

This is Stabs, the xKore animated video flying under the Inspected music label.  A perturbing enforcer, a brute villain and cold urban canyons are the key elements.

In about 9 weeks I generated 80 shots, a 3D modeled dark and ominous city center, 3D cars, effects, and piles of hand drawn animation.    Environment concepts, figuring out who the characters were and the animatic was done in 2 weeks.  The character key poses were hand drawn and scanned into Toonboom Animate for clean up, tweening and color.  Compositing was in After Effects.  Produced by Inspected.  Thomas Slinger and Ryan Leech, Directors, Editors and concept.

There is more than 33 seconds of additional animation that is either not included in the xKore Stabs final edit, or is significantly cut short.  Please do see the Stabs Outtakes reel and the background art.

I was given reference for the villain, Dr. X, early on.  Not knowing about an existing Stabs design I initially thought of either an absolute wild man, or retro version of a seasoned mercenary.  Below you will see some rough workups for whom Stabs might be – in blue.  My sketches for Dr. X are in red.  You can click on these to enlarge.

For the xKore music video I created background art by ultimately modeling an entire downtown area in 3D.

The clients wanted a brooding Gotham-like cityscape.  I took that another step and built temple-like structures – as if the Soviet architects under Stalin had decided they wanted temples, to whatever service (insert your imagination here).  These temples, as huge as they are, are they themselves dwarfed by colossal office towers – temples of capitalism.  Both architectural groups suggest a form of empire teetering on the point of uninhabited implosion.  Some of these scene setups did not make the final cut of the video.  Please scroll down and see significant extra work, plus some of the concept art.

Concept Art

A lino block print, brown ink on Arches watercolor paper, hand tinted with Windsor & Newton watercolors.  The image area is 7×5 inches.  The paper size is approximately 10×8.  I am making an edition of 50.  Because of the variations in inking, tinting and papers, I am listing each print individually at my Etsy store (soon).

I’m donating five dollars from each purchase to Doctors Without Borders.  This charity has an excellent rating for putting our contributions ‘in the field’.  Most companies give fractional amounts from ‘profits’.  You’re helping with a specific amount, off the top.

I’ve had several dogs, all great companions in their own right.  Chip was like nobody else, always on, always ready.  And for most of his life, barely able to contain himself – though he tried, he really tried.  I didn’t have him as a puppy.  He showed up at a hideout in the woods, with a jaw that had been fractured and a desperate need to belong.  I already had two dogs and didn’t want a third.  After many days of me offering no threat, and also not much encouragement, he disappeared.  I was hoping he went back to a decent home.  If that home wasn’t good and he came back to me, then I decided I’d keep him.  One night driving in I paused the truck before descending down into the saddle of a ridge where I was staying.  I had a feeling he was close.  Looking through a clearing, where comet Hale-Bopp had recently been, I saw him.  An enthusiastic silhouette reared its head from a nap.  You could say he’s still here, and not just with me.

A mostly After Effects animated music video for Modestep, I am credited as Animation Lead Colourist.  I painted all of Alex Young’s line art.  That is all the character animation except for the concert scenes.  It was great working with Richard Payne, who is currently directing at NTSH London.  See more of the art after the break.
